UI Celebrates Diversity Week
NEW HAVEN – During Diversity Week, Sept. 18-21, employees of The United Illuminating Company will celebrate their differences and take in a serious message of inclusion and respect. They’ll also help the company meet key challenges within its industry. A diverse, inclusive work environment:
- fosters productivity. Employees who accept each other and embrace their differences are able to work together and get the job done.
- better positions the Company to serve the diverse population in its 17-town service area, which includes Bridgeport, New Haven and surrounding communities.
- supports recruiting efforts at a time when UI foresees challenges in this area. About a third of the Company’s employees are expected to reach retirement age within the next five years.
Virtually all of UI’s roughly 950 employees will participate in Diversity Week. Each day about one quarter, including management and union employees from various departments of the Company, will gather for lunch, speeches, and participatory presentations focused on diversity-related topics. The events will build on last year’s Diversity Week theme, W.I.R.E.D. (We Include and Respect Everyone Daily).
Diversity Week, which will be held at UI’s Electric System Work Center in Shelton, Conn., will also serve as the kick-off for the Company’s 2007 United Way Campaign. It will feature a special presentation and activities that highlight the diverse communities that United Way dollars support.
The United Illuminating Company is committed to fostering a diverse, respectful and inclusive work environment. Since 2000, the Company’s Diversity Advisory Team has organized diversity-related events. It has sponsored Diversity Week since 2005.
