UI Crews to Remove Monk Parakeet Nests from Electrical Equipment
New Haven, CT – On Tuesday, October 23, power delivery crews from The United Illuminating Company will begin removing 89 monk parakeet nests located on electrical distribution equipment throughout its service territory.
Nests will be cleared from utility poles in the following towns: West Haven, Stratford, Milford, Bridgeport, New Haven, Hamden, and East Haven.
Please note: UI is not capturing any monk parakeets. UI is only removing nests located on its equipment. UI will not remove nests in trees or bushes. The timing of the latest removals coincides with the end of the birds’ typical breeding season.
“UI’s chief concern is public health and safety and keeping the lights on for our customers,” explained Rich Reed, UI’s vice president – electric system. “We monitored the nests removed this past March and identified the locations where nests have been rebuilt as well as construction of new nests.”
Monk parakeet nests located on utility equipment pose a risk to public health and safety and can impede UI's ability to provide reliable electric service to its customers.
