Electricity generation services in Connecticut were deregulated in 2000. UI’s customers have choices when purchasing their generation service. They can remain with UI and use the electricity that we buy, or switch to an alternate supplier licensed to serve Connecticut customers. Regardless of the electricity supplier you select, UI will continue to provide safe and reliable delivery to your home or business.

Alternate Electric Suppliers/Aggregators

CT DPUC licensed electric suppliers/aggregators are independent companies that have been approved by the CT DPUC to provide generation services to retail electric customers. Services provided by one of these suppliers/aggregators replaces either the Last Resort Service or the Standard Service provided by UI. . A current CT DPUC maintained list of licensed suppliers and aggregators can be found by visiting the following site.

UI Rates

The total rate you pay for electricity consists of several components. First, there is a Basic Service charge for service and a Delivery Charge for the electricity you actually use. When combined, we refer to this portion of the rate as the “Distribution”. Next is the actual cost of the electricity you have used. “Generation”. Finally, there are several other line items included on the bill as directed by our state and federal regulatory agencies.

If you select an electricity supplier other than UI, you’ll be changing the generation portion of your bill.

The United Illuminating Company has two basic rates for residential customers, Rate R and Rate RT.

  • Rate R provides a constant charge for the electricity you use regardless of when you use it. Day, night, weekend, or weekday it is all the same price. There is a twice yearly price adjustment from the winter to the summer peak period and back.
  • Rate RT is our time of use rate for residential customers. From 12 noon until 8 PM weekdays (the peak period), the electricity you use costs more than electricity used at other times.
