Summer Saver Rewards Program

Thank you for being part of the 2007 Summer Saver Rewards Program.
Through a recent decision from the Department of Public Utility Control (DPUC), all UI customers are automatically enrolled into this program. This posting is to inform you of the details of the program and to highlight the Summer Saver Rewards calculations associated with your account.

This program was designed to encourage customers to take charge of their energy future and reduce their energy use during the summer period of July through September. Eligible credits are based on your ability to lower your 2007 summer energy usage compared to 2006. Summer Saver rewards credits of 10, 15, and 20% on the Generation Service Charge (GSC) of your electric bill for the summer period were possible.

  • 10% credit if you lowered your 2007 usage by at least 10%,
  • 15% credit if you lowered your 2007 usage by at least 15%
  • 20% credit if you lowered your 2007 usage by at least 20%.

The information below details an example calculation for the Summer Saver Rewards Program. If you qualified for a Summer Saver Rewards credit, it will appear as a line item on your November electric bill. Click here for credit example.

How we calculated your energy reduction and associated Summer Saver credits:

Your energy use in kWh’s for the summer months of July, August and September 2007 compared against your use in the same period of 2006.

  • A weather normalization factor is applied to your 2007 usage to adjust for the differences in weather from 2006 to this year.
  • A net reduction in kWh’s usage is calculated by subtracting this years normalized kWh from last years.
  • The % reduction in usage for 2007 is calculated by dividing the net reduction by the previous year net usage.

Incentives for the 2007 Summer Saver Period:

  • Reductions between 10% and 14.9% qualified for a 10% credit on the GSC
  • Reductions between 15% and 19.9% qualified for a 15% credit on the GSC
  • Reductions of 20% or greater qualified for a maximum credit of 20% on the GSC

Note: To represent kWh usage for the program period starting on 7/1/2007 and ending on 9/30/2007, we prorated the number of kWh for the days in each months bill that fall within the program period (7/1/2007 to 9/30/2007). This will be defined as Qualified kWh’s and also Qualified Charges

The following is the Summer Saver calculation “example” of electric usage
2006 Billing Period     kWh Usage:   Qualified kWh:
6/6/2006 - 7/5/2006     809     101 (in July)
7/6/2006 - 8/3/2006     1808     1808
8/4/2006 - 9/2/2006     2870     2870
9/5/2006 - 10/2/2006     2312     2032 (in Sept.)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                6811 kWh Total

2007 Billing Period     kWh Usage:   Qualified kWh: Weather Normalized kWh **   Generation Charges   Qualified Generation Charges.
6/6/2007 - 7/5/2006     719     87 (July) 89   $90.84   $11.00
7/6/2006 - 8/3/2006     1090     1090   1112   $136.65   $136.65
8/4/2006 - 9/2/2006     2613     2613   2665   $311.06   $311.06
9/5/2006 - 10/2/2006     2048     1775 (Sept.) 1810   $243.80   $211.51
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    5676 kWh Total   $670.22

kWh Reduction*            =(2007 kWh's)-(2006 kWh's)
                                       =6811-5676 = -1135 kWh’s
Percentage difference in use =1135/ 6811   = 16.66%
Percentage credit applied for 2007 Summer Savers Rewards   = 15%
Qualified Generation Service Charges for July – September   = $670.22
2007 Summer Saver Rewards Program Credit: 15% of $670.22 = $100.53

*    A minus sign (-) in kWh Reduction indicates lower usage in the current year compared to the previous year.
**    2007 Weather Adjustment Multiplication Factor =     1.019853

In addition to the Summer Saver Rewards credit, reduction in energy usage during the 2007 Summer Period has lowered the combined electric bills by approximately $257.65.  This figure is based on the kWh reduction of 1135 kWh multiplied by the average residential billing rate of 22.7 cents per kWh.
