UI Crews Continue Work to Restore Power

ORANGE, Conn. — August 10, 2020 (1 p.m. EDT)  United Illuminating, subsidiary of AVANGRID, Inc. (NYSE: AGR), continues to make significant progress as crews work to restore power to customers impacted by Tropical Storm Isaias. Currently, the company has restored a total of 121,161 customers and remains on track to substantially complete restoration work today.

The company will intensify its focus on the hardest-hit communities today which have the highest number of remaining outages. Damage in these areas is extensive, causing restoration efforts that involve rebuilding the electric distribution system in some locations. In total, there are approximately 860 separate outage-causing events remaining for crews to address across UI’s service territory, many of which need to be individually restored. 

“We thank our customers for their continued patience as we enter the final stage of our restoration efforts,” said Tony Marone, UI’s President and CEO. “Our priority remains restoring service to our customers as safely and quickly as possible.”

UI further expanded its restoration team on Sunday with the arrival of additional contractors, which increased its field team to more than 1127 personnel. The company’s restoration team includes UI crews, contractors and mutual-assistance partners.

Before going out into the field, every UI contractor and mutual assistance partner receives a detailed safety briefing that includes training in hygiene, social distancing, the use of personal protective equipment and other COVID-19 related protocols.

Customers are reminded to stay far away from downed wires, which can be live and dangerous even if they show no signs of being energized. Customers are advised to keep kids and pets inside, and never drive over a downed wire. Always report any downed wires to UI at 800.722.5584 and call 911 if there is an imminent danger.

Customers still without power should report their outage if they have not done so already. Visit uinet.com or call 800.722.5584 (800.7.CALL.UI). Customers can also report outages using the company’s new mobile app, available from the Apple Store and Google Play, or via UI’s mobile alerts system: text “OUT” to 839-884 (TEXT-UI). Registration is required.
