UI’s transmission business unit, established in 2006, achieves growth by identifying, pursuing and capturing transmission opportunities to enhance reliability and market efficiency and deploying infrastructure solutions that provide stakeholder value. Two recent achievements are described below:
With the completion of the Middletown|Norwalk (MN) project in 2008, UI’s rate base increased $300 million. This is an increase of more than 200% relative to UI’s net transmission assets existing prior to the project receiving Connecticut Siting Council approval. UI also recently completed construction of North America’s largest 345-kV Indoor Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation. A 2009 Edison Award Finalist for innovation, Singer Substation, energized and carrying load in December 2008, was built safely and efficiently utilizing cutting edge technology. The substation is the cornerstone of improvements to the electric system serving southwestern Connecticut, an area identified by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission as one of the nation’s top ten reliability risks.
