Community Invited to Support UI and SCG Union Employees at Softball Classic Fundraiser

4th Annual Labor Softball Classic benefits the Connecticut AFL-CIO Workers Memorial Day Scholarship Fund

ORANGE, Conn. — October 7, 2026 — United Illuminating (UI) and Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG), subsidiaries of Avangrid, Inc., are proud to support employees from Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) Local 4701 and United Steelworkers (USW) Local 12000 & 12000-1 as they participate in the 4th Annual Labor Softball Classic on Friday, October 9 at 7 p.m. at Dunkin Stadium in Hartford. The event raises funds for the Connecticut AFL-CIO Workers Memorial Day Scholarship Fund, which provides educational support to students and families across Connecticut.

"Our union employees are coming together for a cause that reflects the values of service, teamwork, and giving back to the community," said Frank Reynolds, President and CEO of UI and SCG. "I am proud of our UWUA and USW members who are volunteering their time to support students and families across Connecticut. Their dedication on the job and in the community reflects the very best of who we are."

The Labor Softball Classic brings together union members from across the state in support of the Connecticut AFL-CIO Workers Memorial Day Scholarship Fund. In addition to raising money for scholarships, the event celebrates the contributions organized labor makes in communities throughout Connecticut.

"Our members take pride in giving back to the communities where we live and work," said Marcelo Assis, President of USW Local 12000 & 12000-1 AFL-CIO-CLC and Service Mechanic A at SCG. "The Labor Softball Classic is a chance to support a meaningful scholarship fund, and we hope to see a great turnout in support of this effort."

Funds raised through the event help continue the scholarship program established in memory of workers who lost their lives because of workplace illnesses or injuries. The Workers Memorial Day Scholarship Essay Contest invites students to thoughtfully explore the real-world impact of workplace hazards on workers and their families.

"This event is an opportunity for families, friends, coworkers, and union members to come together, support future generations, and honor working families," said Moses Rams, President of UWUA Local 470-1 and Chief Line Crew Leader at UI. "We are proud to participate in this annual fundraiser and encourage the community to join us for a great evening and an important cause.”
