UI is Restoring Power to Customers After Severe Thunderstorm
The company is working quickly to assess damages and restore power
ORANGE, Conn. — August 13, 2026 – United Illuminating (UI), a subsidiary of Avangrid, Inc., is making progress on restoring power for customers experiencing an outage due to the severe thunderstorm that affected part of the service territory overnight. More than 4,000 customers lost power early Thursday morning and the crews are working on restoration.
“Our crews are working hard on restoration efforts after the extreme thunderstorm brought heavy wind and lightning to our service territory overnight,” said Angela Baccaro, UI spokesperson. “The severe weather caused downed trees and tree limbs, broken poles, and downed wires, primarily throughout Milford and Orange. We worked with the affected municipalities to clear roads and are currently focusing on restoring power. Due to the locally heavy damage, restoration will continue throughout the day and into tonight. We appreciate our customers’ patience and we are grateful for our crews that have been out in the community since early this morning to get everyone’s power back on as quickly and safely as possible. Remember to stay far away from any downed wires that you may see.”

Safety tips
Stay far away from downed wires and anything that may be in contact with them. Report downed wires and other electrical hazards to UI at 800.722.5584. Remember, no line is safe to touch - ever!
If a downed wire comes in contact with your vehicle, stay inside, call 911 and wait for help. If you must get out because of fire or other danger, avoid making contact with the vehicle and the ground at the same time. Jump clear of the vehicle, land with your feet together, and hop away with both feet together, or shuffle away without lifting your feet. Don't run or stride.
