UI, SCG Partner with United Way to Help Customers Manage Their Energy Bills 

As part of United Way’s “Utility Resource Fair,” customers can enroll in payment assistance programs, get answers to billing questions, and learn about available energy efficiency incentives 

United Way will also be available to connect attendees with workforce development organizations, provide additional financial assistance  

 

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — April 16, 2025 — United Illuminating (UI) and Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG), subsidiaries of Avangrid, Inc., announced that tomorrow, April 17, 2025, the companies will host an in-person Customer Enrollment Event in partnership with the United Way of Greater New Haven at their “Utility Resource Fair.” At the event, Customer Service Representatives with both companies will be available to enroll any qualifying UI and/or SCG customers into energy bill payment assistance programs and answer bill-related questions. In addition, the companies’ energy efficiency experts with EnergizeCT™ will be on hand to provide information on energy efficiency incentives that can help lower usage.

Tomorrow’s “Utility Resource Fair” and Customer Enrollment Event, to be held from 3 PM to 6 PM at the United Way office (370 James St., Suite 403), will also be attended by several workforce development organizations and the Community Action Agency of New Haven.

We encourage all customers with questions or concerns about their energy bills to stop by.” 

 

Customers interested in enrolling in qualifying payment assistance programs will need to bring their electric/gas bills, account number, and any documentation (e.g., paystubs; unemployment documentation; enrollment in SNAP, WIC, HUSKY, and/or other state/federal assistance programs that indicate financial hardship) that applies to their situation.

Low-Income Discount Rate (LIDR) (UI only) 

The low-income discount rate, available for UI customers, can help lower customers' electric bills if they qualify. Customers will receive a 10% (Tier 1) or 50% (Tier 2) discount on their monthly charges. For example, for a customer whose monthly charges totaled $100, s/he would receive a $10 or $50 discount on each monthly bill. 

Matching Payment Program (MPP)   

Available to residential customers, this program is designed to help lower energy bills for those who can demonstrate financial hardship. UI/SCG/CNG will match every dollar paid by customers or on their behalf, up to a zero balance.   

Flexible Payment Arrangements 

Available to all residential customers, regardless of financial status. Customers can pay past-due balances over a period of up to 18 months.
