UI Shares Tips to Save on Energy Costs This Summer
Customers can use the Energy Analyzer tool for personalized insights and to learn how to save on energy costs
ORANGE, Conn. — June 19, 2026 — With summer temperatures on the rise, United Illuminating (UI), a subsidiary of Avangrid, Inc., is sharing tips and resources to help customers stay cool while managing their energy use. UI is encouraging customers to take simple steps now to stay comfortable and keep costs down throughout the season.
“Summer heat can drive up energy use quickly, but there are simple steps every household can take to stay comfortable and manage costs,” said Frank Reynolds, President and CEO of UI. “By using cooling equipment efficiently and taking advantage of UI’s tools and resources, customers can stay in control of their energy use all season long. Our priority is to help families stay safe, informed, and prepared as temperatures rise.”
High temperatures may increase household electricity use, which can drive up energy bills. Electricity consumption increases in hot and humid weather due to air conditioners and other appliances working harder, running fans and pool pumps, and having poor insulation.
UI recommends that customers take the following steps to help reduce energy consumption and manage summer costs:
Use fans wisely — Ceiling fans can make a room feel up to 4 degrees cooler. Remember to turn them off when leaving the room.
Set air conditioning to 75° or higher during the warm season. Turning the thermostat back 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day from its normal setting can save as much as 10% a year on cooling.
Keep blinds and curtains closed on hot, sunny days to block heat from entering your home.
Avoid using heat‑producing appliances like ovens, dishwashers, and dryers during the hottest parts of the day.
Seal air leaks around windows and doors to keep cool air inside.
Maintain your cooling system by cleaning or replacing filters regularly to improve efficiency.
Use a smart or programmable thermostat to automatically adjust temperatures when you’re away or asleep.
