Energy Storage Solutions

Energy Storage Solutions is a new statewide energy storage program designed to help our customers install energy storage at their home or business. Energy storage (i.e. battery storage technology) backup can help customers across Connecticut – from homeowners and small business owners to industrial manufacturers and critical infrastructure facilities – be more secure in the face of our changing climate. Energy Storage Solutions will help create a more reliable, resilient Connecticut, especially for vulnerable communities and those hit hardest by storm-related outages. But backup power does more than just help during an outage. The battery systems installed through this program contribute to the grid during critical times for an additional benefit to all customers.

This program is overseen by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA), is paid for by customers, and is administered by Eversource, Green Bank, and UI.

Energy Storage Solutions for Homes

Having a battery installed in your home can help you be more prepared when storms are on the horizon. Batteries can be your backup power source if you experience an outage to keep your lights on and essential appliances like your fridge running.

Though they work great on their own, pairing batteries with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems can ensure that you can not only use power during an outage, but also recharge them when the sun comes out.

Energy Storage Solutions will help lower the cost of buying a battery by providing an upfront incentive. Incentives are available for batteries paired with solar PV systems, as well as standalone batteries. Initially, the average residential customer will be eligible for an upfront incentive of around $200 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of battery capacity, with a maximum incentive per project of $7,500. For example, this would be $2,700 for a single 13.5 kWh battery unit, or $5,400 for two. Residential customers enrolled in the program will also receive performance incentive payments every year based on the average power your battery contributes to the grid during critical periods.

We also provide additional incentives for:

  • Low-income customers
  • Underserved communities
  • Customers with medical needs or hardships
  • Grid Edge customers who historically experience the most frequent and longest duration outages. To determine if you are a Grid Edge customer click on the following link to look up your address.

Energy Storage Solutions for Buildings & Communities

For commercial and industrial (C&I) customers, battery systems provide an opportunity for peak demand management and can increase resiliency by offering backup power during an outage. If you already have fossil-fuel generators, battery systems tied to new or existing solar PV systems can offer an environmentally friendly alternative.

C&I customers are eligible for upfront incentives to help reduce the cost of purchasing a battery system, with a maximum incentive of 50% of the project cost. If enrolled in the Program, you will also receive performance incentive payments based on the average power your electric storage project contributes to the grid during critical periods.
