Make Your Holidays Warm and Bright
Save Money and Energy — A Gift to Your Family and the Environment
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Dec. 10, 2012 — The holiday season is here, and for many of us that means keeping Jack Frost at bay with festive decorations and evenings at home with family. But amid the hustle and bustle, those holiday lights and cozy nights can silently transform a happy holiday to a New Year’s challenge in the form of higher energy expenses.
UIL Holdings Corporation and its utilities — The United Illuminating Company, The Southern Connecticut Gas Company, Connecticut Natural Gas Corporation and Berkshire Gas Company —invite you to consider ways your family can save on lighting and heating costs this holiday season.
“Costs have a way of piling up as we celebrate the holidays — and the cost of energy may be far from people’s minds as they gather with their families and friends,” said Anthony Marone, UIL’s vice president for business services. “We at UIL understand that times are still tight, and we want to help customers stretch their energy dollars so they can enjoy the holidays without breaking the budget.”
UIL offers the following tips for saving money on energy during the holidays:
Deck the halls with LEDs. ENERGY STAR® -qualified LED (light-emitting diode) decorative light strands consume 70 percent less energy than conventional incandescent light strands. They’re also cool to the touch, so they reduce the risk of fire. Visit energystar.gov (search term: “decorative light strings”) for more information.
Lower lighting costs. Lighting accounts for nearly 20 percent of a typical home’s electric bill. Save year-round by replacing old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs with efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) and LED bulbs. CFLs and LEDs cost more up front, but they save electricity and money over the long term. To learn more about efficient lighting, call 877-WISE-USE (877-947-3873) or visit uinet.com (search term: “Lighting”) for information.
Yule log without the smog. If you enjoy cozy nights by the fire, consider installing a natural gas fireplace. Enjoy a real hearth with real flames, without the mess or fuss of a wood fire. Environmentally friendly natural gas burns cleaner than wood, without the chopping and hauling. Contact your home improvement or appliance store for more information.
Heat with natural gas. Now is the time to make the switch to environmentally friendly natural gas heat. Heating with natural gas currently costs less than half the cost to heat with oil, and a variety of rebates are available to help with up-front conversion costs. You can learn more from your UIL gas utility:

Upgrade your thermostat. Replacing an older thermostat with a digital, programmable model can help you keep warm while you’re at home, but save you money when you’re away or asleep. Remember to dispose properly of older thermostats that contain mercury. You can learn more about mercury disposal at the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s website, ct.gov/deep (search term “mercury”).
Schedule a home energy audit. No matter the time of year, efficiency pays.
• Connecticut utility customers can take advantage of the Home Energy Solutions program, paid for by rate-payers through the Energy Efficiency Fund. For a $75 co-payment (waived for income-eligible customers) an auditor will provide a full energy inspection and make up to $750 worth of on-the-spot improvements such as caulking, sealing and efficient light bulbs. You’ll also learn about energy-saving upgrades, rebates and offers. Visit ctenergyinfo.com or call 877-947-3873 (877-WISE-USE).
• Customers of Berkshire Gas in Massachusetts can schedule free energy assessments, with significant discounts on energy-saving improvements such as insulation and sealing. Customers who meet income qualifications may be eligible for free energy-saving improvements. Call 800-944-3212 or visit berkshiregas.com for information.
Give the gift of energy! If you know a customer of The United Illuminating Company who would like some help with the electric bill, call 800-722-5584 (800-7-CALL-UI) and request a Gift of Energy certificate in their name. The gift certificate will be applied to the customer's account once payment is confirmed. What a great way to brighten someone's holiday!
