UI Makes Progress in First Year of LED Streetlight Program-04.13.2016
04.13.2016 - UI Makes Progress in First Year of LED Streetlight Program
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Orange, Conn. — April 13, 2016 — The United Illuminating Company, subsidiary of AVANGRID, Inc. (NYSE: AGR), has installed more than 15,000 highly efficient streetlights in the first year of its LED street-lighting program.
The six-year program, which got underway in 2015, is expected to save millions of dollars and significantly reduce the energy required to provide bright, safe lighting for the region’s streets. UI owns and maintains the streetlights in 16 of the 17 towns and cities it serves.
UI rolled out the program in Bridgeport last summer and has now completed the streetlight replacement in about 95 percent of the city. In Stratford, the streetlight replacement is about 85 percent complete. UI expects to begin installing LED streetlights in North Haven this year.
“These streetlights provide high-quality lighting and can reduce energy costs for our municipal customers. Over time, they’ll also reduce UI’s maintenance costs, since LED fixtures last much longer than traditional ones and require less frequent replacement,” said Joe Thomas, UI vice president for Electric System Operations.
Deployment of the LED streetlights is proceeding town by town, on a timetable that reflects the age and UI’s normal replacement schedule of the existing streetlights. The rollout — totaling approximately 51,000 bulbs — is expected to continue through 2020.
The light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures yield a bright, crisp light. They are up to 40 percent more efficient than the high-pressure sodium fixtures they’re replacing, and they last up to 2.5 times longer.
When complete, the program is expected to reduce annual electric consumption by about 12.8 million kilowatt-hours across UI’s system — more electricity than 1,500 typical homes use during a year. In terms of environmental impact, that’s equivalent to the carbon dioxide-emissions produced by burning 4,740 tons of coal, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (epa.gov/energy/greenhouse-gas-equivalencies-calculator).
The longer-lasting fixtures are also expected to reduce UI’s cost to maintain the streetlights by an estimated $2.6 million over 15 years. For towns and cities where the LED fixtures are installed, savings will vary depending on the municipality’s choice of lighting wattage and generation service supplier, both of which affect costs.
