03.08.2018 - UI Makes Significant Headway as Restoration Effort Continues
ORANGE, Connecticut — March 8, 2018 (9:30 p.m. EST) — United Illuminating, a subsidiary of AVANGRID, Inc. (NYSE: AGR), made significant progress restoring electric service across its service territory Thursday, and company officials said crews would once again work overnight to get the power back on for those customers still in the dark after Wednesday’s nor’easter.
As of 9:30 p.m., approximately 6,140 UI customers remained without service, out of more than 35,000 customers affected by the storm. Approximately 300 restoration personnel participated in the effort on Thursday, and the company said it expects additional crews to arrive from out of state in the days ahead.
“We have been ramping up our response ever since the storm struck, and we are seeing good progress — but we still have work to do,” said Tony Marone, UI’s president and CEO. “Right now we are in the process of completing our damage assessment of the system, as we continue in parallel to make restoration efforts. That’s ongoing, and it will continue until every customer is restored.”
Marone said restoration teams worked overnight Wednesday and will continue to work 24/7 until the effort is complete. Despite this, some customer outages could last several days as crews physically rebuild the damaged electric system.
Company officials urged customers to look out for downed wires. Customers should assume downed wires are live and dangerous. They should stay far away and avoid touching anything that may be in contact with them. Report them to UI by calling 800.722.5584, or call 911 if there is imminent danger.
