UI SUBMITS pilot “green power” projects to

Department of Energy and Environmental Protection

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Feb 16, 2016 - The United Illuminating Company, an operating company of AVANGRID, INC. (NYSE: AGR) announced today that it submitted five pilot projects to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) showing how the company plans to integrate renewable energy into its electric distribution system.

UI’s demonstration projects range from using battery storage to resolve peak demand in the summer, to integration of distributed energy resources on specific circuits in UI’s distribution network. Distributed energy resources are smaller power sources that can be aggregated to provide power necessary to meet regular demand and offer alternatives to the traditional large central station electric power resources. They often use renewable green sources -- like solar and wind – and can help transition to more environmentally friendly sources of electricity.

“Customers expect us to develop and sustain a grid that also offers them flexibility and choice in how they use energy. We are a leader when it comes to piloting new technologies and investing in renewable sources that will provide our customers with high quality service and options,” said James P. Torgerson, CEO of AVANGRID.

DEEP is reviewing all the submitted proposals as well as accepting public comment on the proposals until March 1. A final decision on the submitted proposals is expected later in the year. UI developed the proposals in response to state legislation that requires electric distribution companies to submit proposals for pilot programs for enhancements to the electric grid to allow better integration of distributed energy resources.

“The knowledge acquired from these pilots will give us access to information that will support strategies for managing and integrating renewable generation. It is an exciting opportunity to be part of an energy solution,” said Michael Coretto, UIL’s vice president regulatory affairs.

AVANGRID, Inc. (NYSE: AGR) is a diversified energy and utility company with $30 billion in assets and operations in 25 states.
